Imperatives

Hoy vamos a repasar o aprender los imperativos en inglés, algo fácil y muy útil pero, te vamos a pedir el esfuerzo de leerlo en inglés, así reforzamos un poco más. ¿Vamos?:

Do you feel like learning something new today?

Remember that grammar is so important when you are learning a new language because it allows you to form sentences correctly and understand texts and conversations.

So, on that note, let’s start with today’s topic: imperatives.

Imperatives are often used to tell people what to do and what not to do. This is why we have affirmative and negative imperative sentences.

So, how do we form these sentences?

Well, affirmative imperatives are formed with an infinitive without the particle “to”.

Here are some examples:

Go away! You are not welcome here!

Tell him I’m sorry.

Turn left at the traffic lights.

Negative imperatives are constructed with “do not”, or its contraction “don’t”, and an infinitive without “to”.

Look at the following examples:

Don’t leave yet! It’s still early.

Don’t have a big snack this afternoon. We’re eating dinner early tonight.

Don’t turn left at the traffic lights.

This simple structure can be used to indicate other things as well.

Imperatives are also used to give advice or information, for invitations or offers, and to express concern for people’s welfare

Look at the following examples:

Be careful! The plate is very hot.

Let me help you. You are carrying too much.

Don’t run or you might fall over.

When you make suggestions to a group which includes yourself, you can use the imperative “let us”. We usually use the contraction “let’s”. For example,

Let’s go to the beach!

I’m bored. Let’s play football in the garden!

Well, that was a lot of grammar! We are sure you understood it all though. For more on English: Aulaglobal,  because we are in Lorca to help you along the way: learning English

Have a great Tuesday!

All the best,
