Empezamos enseguida un nuevo curso escolar y lo profesores que formamos Aulaglobal estamos preparados para volver a dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos y hacer que nuestros alumnos disfruten aprendiendo  a la vez que refuerzan su responsabilidad. 

Comenzaremos a impartir clase a Primaria el 14 de septiembre y a ESO y Bachillerato el 1 de octubre, sólo nos queda cerrar los horarios, tarea nada fácil cuando se quiere complacer a tanta gente, pero en breve los tendremos. Prometido. 

Lo que sí sabemos es que este año es especial por varios motivos: nuestros alumnos van creciendo y cambiando de curso !Nuestros niños del  Little Club ya comienzan Primaria! Otros se marchan a la Universidad o emprenden un nuevo camino y otros ocuparán su lugar y tendrán que superar ese último curso y esas "temibles" pero luego sencillas pruebas.

Como cada año todos y cada uno de nuestros alumnos contará con nuestro apoyo y también nos sufrirá, no es tarea fácil exigir dar lo mejor de uno mismo pero ese es nuestro lema: JUST DO YOUR BEST.

The origin of the famous "Keep calm and Carry on"

Over recent years, in gift shops and online retailers, there has been an explosion in one theme: ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’. Originally a poster from Britain during the Second World War, you can now buy the simple but reassuring message on almost anything, ready for display in your house or office. There’s just one small problem: the poster wasn’t used during the war, and hardly anyone ever saw it. Thanks to doctoral research from Dr.Rebecca Lewis, we now know the story.

The Unused Poster

In 1939, it became apparent to many people in Britain that a war on the continent was inevitable. Hitler had broken promise after promise, and there seemed little chance he wouldn’t take a decision which provoked war. To this end, Britain’s Ministry of Information decided that one thing which might suffer during the war, especially during the aerial bombardment many had calculated would cause massive losses, was the civilian morale. To this end it was decided – although not without objections – to create five million morale boosting posters which could be quickly pasted up.

Designs were created, and three soon went into action.

The first pair bore the following messages: ‘Freedom is in Peril: Defend it with all Your Might’, and ‘Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution will bring us Victory’. These were handed out while a third, the now iconic ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ was held back to be used when the German bombing campaign really bit. Other, more specific, posters were also created, such as one explaining ‘Our Fighting Men Depend on You’, aimed at docks and factories.

But the first period of the war passed without this bombing, and so Keep Calm, all two and a half million copies, remained in storage.

Useful colloquial expressions

Aquí tenemos algunas de las frases más comunes en el inglés coloquial, que puedes escuchar por la calle, y que te permitirán entablar conversaciones más cercanas con los ingleses:

• It sounds Greek to me:  Me suena a chino
• Keep you hair on! :  ¡Cálmate!
• Like water off duck´s back:  A palabras necias, oídos sordos.
• Make yourself at home:  Estás en tu casa
• New brush sweeps clean but old broom knows all the corners:  Mejor malo conocido que bueno por conocer.
• Out of the blue:  Como caído del cielo
• Pardon my French:  Perdón por lo que voy a decir/ acabo de decir.
• Rings a bell:  Me suena
• Shoot the breeze:  Darle a la lengua.
• Talking of the devil:  Hablando del rey de Roma.
• Upside down:  Boca abajo/ del revés.
• We´re even:  Estamos en paz.
• You´re on thin ice:  Te la estás jugando.

THE ORIGIN OF “KEEP CALM & CARRY ON”

 

In 1939, on the eve of World War Two, The Ministry of Information produced public reassurance posters in uniform design for the purpose of steadying the nerves of the general public and boosting morale at a time of war.

The posters layout was simple with each design carrying a short and authoritative message from the King to his people with large white bold letters on a striking red background along with an image of the Kings crown. As war broke out, the instruction from The Ministry of Information to display the posters was issued and the task of putting up the posters around the country started.

The poster that bore the (now famous) phrase, ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ was never officially put on public display; it was reserved for a ‘last case scenario’ such as the German invasion of Britain! Today only a handful of the original posters survive and most are held by the British National Archives. Only two posters are in private hands, one is held by WarTimePosters.co.uk and one by Barter Books in Alnwick, Northumberland (responsible for starting the recent popularity of the poster). Since its recent discovery, the poster has now captured the attention of the world.

The ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ poster is also becoming recognised as a British icon around the world alongside other icons British such as the red telephone box

Adverbs of degree

Expresar lo que sentimos hacia algo nos ayuda a comunicar mejor lo que pensamos, o lo que queremos decir, nos ayuda a que nos entiendan. Por eso hay veces que una sola palabra no es suficiente para expresar algo. Puede que te estés tomando tu plato favorito, y sientas que no solo está bueno, sino que está muy bueno. O puede que estés viendo una película de terror y no solo tienes miedo, sino que tienes muchísimo miedo.

Estas palabras que estamos añadiendo nos ayudan a enfatizar, a dar un grado de intensidad a lo que sentimos. No todo está en el mismo lugar, a veces necesitamos distintas posiciones para catalogar algo: esto está bueno, muy bueno, tremendamente bueno. Y por ello usamos los adverbios de grado, “Adverbs of degree“.

Los adverbs of degree, los adverbios de grado, se utilizan para dar intensidad o indicar el grado de una determinada acción, haciéndolos más fuertes o débiles. Por ello se colocan normalmente delante de los adjetivos, verbos o adverbios.

Ej: “The water was extremely cold”

Hay distintos tipos de Adverbs of degree, que variarán según lo que queramos decir:

“Very/ Extremely”, (Muy/ Extremadamente) estos adverbios se usan con los “gradable adjectives“, los adjetivos que no son extremos, y por tanto se pueden enfatizar.

• Ej: “She doesn´t like terror film, she is very impressive”
• Ej: “Look that girl, She´s extremelybeatiful”

“Absolutely“, (Absolutamente/ Totalmente) este adverbio se usa con los “non gradable adjectives”, ya que este adverbio es extremo, y se va a enfatizar solo eso.

• Ej: “Oh my god, this views are absolutelygorgeous!”

Otros adverbios no tienen una colocación exclusiva, aunque suelen usarse con ciertos adjetivos:

“Utterly”, (Extremadamente)

• Ej:” I think the computer is utterly useful, I use it all days”

“Highly”, (Altamente)

• Ej: “Mary studied in a public school, and she is a highly educated girl”

“Totally”, (Totalmente)

• Ej: “Today I woke up at 6.00 am, I´m totally exhausted”

“Completely”, (Completamente)

• Ej: ” Jonh and Jacob are twins, but they are completely different unless, their appearance”

Los siguientes adverbios pueden tener más de un significado, dependiendo del adjetivo o adverbio que lo acompañe:

“Quite” + adjective (Moderadamente)

• Ej:” The film was quite good”

“Quite” + ungradable adjective/adverb (Completamente/ Absolutamente)

• Ej: “He was quite right to make a complaint”

“Rather” + negative adjective (Moderadamente), la oración tendrá un significado negativo.

• Ej: “He´s a rather lazy student”

“Rather” + positive adjective (Muy), la oración tendrá un significado positivo.

• Ej: “She´s rather good at history”
